Contemporary Egyptian Painter & Sculptor
Painter · Sculptor · Draftsman
Bridging the ancient inheritance of Upper Egypt with a contemporary visual language — across oil on canvas, granite, bronze, wood, and ink.
"Each medium carries its own memory — the canvas holds light differently than granite holds weight. I work across all of them because the human experience is not one material, and neither should be the art that responds to it."
Mohamed Sabry Bastawy
The Artist
In the studio, Alexandria · 2025
Born in Rashid (Rosetta), North Egypt, in 1983, with roots deep in Luxor and the heritage of Upper Egypt, Mohamed Sabry Bastawy has built a practice that refuses the boundaries of a single medium. Having lived and worked across Rashid, Minya, Assiut, and Alexandria, he paints, sculpts, draws, and photographs — each discipline feeding the others in the creation of a world at once ancient and contemporary.
Trained at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Alexandria University, where he graduated with highest honors and now serves as Associate Professor in the Sculpture Department, Bastawy holds a D.F.A. (Ph.D.) in Philosophy of Fine Arts and an M.F.A. in Ceramic Sculpture. He is a rare figure in Egyptian art: a practitioner-scholar who bridges the classroom and the exhibition hall. His work carries the imprint of Nubian-Assyrian sculpture, Persian miniature, and the layered storytelling of Upper Egyptian popular culture — merged into a visual language that is entirely his own.
He has collaborated with the late master sculptor Adam Henein, served as Vice Commissaire of the 20th Aswan International Sculpture Symposium for three consecutive editions, and exhibited across Egypt, the Arab world, and internationally — from the Cairo Salon and the Youth Salon to Forever is Now at the Pyramids, galleries in Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Canada, the 6th International Sculpture Symposium in Heraklion, Crete, and the Silk Road Artists' Workshop in China. His work resides in the Museum of Modern Egyptian Art, Aswan Open Museum, Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the Municipality of Heraklion, and international private collections. The Times, London featured his painting The Village following its appearance at Bonhams.
